PCR Testing & Diagnostics

PCR Testing and Diagnostics for Pets in Dubai

Getting the diagnosis right is the most important step in treating any illness. At Aura Veterinary Center, our in-house diagnostic capabilities mean we do not send you home to wait days for answers from an external laboratory. Most results are available the same day, and where specialist laboratory referral is needed, we manage that process and contact you as soon as findings are ready.

International travel documentation requires approved external laboratory testing, not in-house PCR

When to come in

Book an appointment if any of the following apply to your pet.

  • Your pet is unwell and your vet needs to identify the cause quickly
  • Your pet has been exposed to an infectious disease and you want confirmation
  • Recurring illness that has not responded clearly to previous treatment
  • Your pet lives with other animals and you need to rule out contagious infection
  • Pre-boarding or pre-grooming screening at facilities that require it

What it covers

What PCR and diagnostic testing covers

PCR, or polymerase chain reaction testing, identifies the genetic material of viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens directly. It is the most sensitive and specific diagnostic tool available for infectious disease, capable of detecting an infection before clinical signs have fully developed. At Aura, we use PCR testing as part of a broader diagnostic approach that includes full blood count and biochemistry panels, urinalysis, rapid point-of-care antigen testing, cytology and culture where appropriate, and pre-travel health screening.

Conditions we routinely test for include tick-borne diseases including Ehrlichia, Babesia, and Anaplasma, which are prevalent in the UAE due to the climate and import of pets from affected regions, respiratory infections including Bordetella, Mycoplasma, canine influenza, and feline herpesvirus, gastrointestinal infections including parvovirus, coronavirus, Giardia, and Tritrichomonas, and feline-specific conditions including FIV, FeLV, and feline infectious peritonitis screening.

When diagnostic testing is needed

• Acute illness where rapid identification of the cause determines treatment

• Chronic or recurring illness that has not been fully explained

• Pre-travel health screening and PCR certification for international relocation

• Suspected tick-borne disease, particularly in dogs with access to outdoor spaces

• Respiratory illness in multi-pet households where spread is a concern

• Pre-surgical blood panel as part of anaesthetic preparation

• Annual senior bloodwork as part of a wellness check

• Newly adopted animals with unknown disease history

What to expect

Before your appointment

For most blood panels and PCR tests, no special preparation is required. Fasting for 4 to 6 hours before the appointment improves the accuracy of some biochemistry values and is recommended where possible. If you are travelling internationally with your pet, contact us as early as possible. Travel health requirements are complex, vary by destination, and change regularly. Crucially, international travel testing often requires samples to be processed by approved external laboratories such as CVRL, not in-house facilities, and this affects both the timeline and process. We will guide you through what is required for your specific destination and make sure nothing is missed.

During your appointment

Sample collection is brief and handled with Fear Free technique throughout. Blood draws, swabs, and urine collection are all performed gently and with minimal restraint. For anxious patients, we take whatever time is needed to make the process as calm as possible. Most sample collection takes under 5 minutes and the vast majority of pets tolerate it well with the right approach.

After your appointment

For in-house tests, your vet will review results with you the same day and explain what the findings mean and what happens next. For samples sent to our partner laboratory, we contact you directly as soon as results arrive and schedule a follow-up call or appointment to discuss them. You will never receive a result without an explanation.

04

Our approach

Diagnostics are a tool for reaching the right answer, not a way to generate a list of billable tests. At Aura, we select the tests most likely to answer the clinical question at hand, explain our reasoning before collecting samples, and interpret findings in the context of the full clinical picture. A blood result that looks abnormal on paper does not always mean a problem exists, and we take care not to alarm owners with numbers that require clinical context to understand.

For international travel, we coordinate the health certificate and documentation process with you but are clear that approved travel testing must go through authorised external laboratories. We do not advise on travel requirements from memory. We verify current requirements at the time of booking because they change, and the consequences of missing a step can mean your pet cannot travel or faces quarantine on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

What is a PCR test for pets and why is it more accurate than other tests?

PCR, or polymerase chain reaction, is a molecular diagnostic technique that detects the DNA or RNA of a pathogen directly, rather than looking for the immune response to it. This makes it more sensitive than antibody-based tests, particularly in the early stages of infection when the immune response has not yet fully developed. It is the diagnostic standard for many infectious diseases in both human and veterinary medicine.

Which tick-borne diseases are most common in dogs in Dubai?

Ehrlichiosis, caused by Ehrlichia canis, is the most frequently diagnosed tick-borne disease in dogs in the UAE. Babesiosis and anaplasmosis are also seen, particularly in dogs imported from other regions. Many of these diseases can be present at low levels without obvious symptoms for months, making screening relevant even in dogs that appear well, particularly those who spend time outdoors or in areas with tick exposure.

Does my pet need a PCR test to travel internationally from Dubai?

It depends entirely on your destination country, your pet's species, and their vaccination history. Many countries require a rabies titre test rather than a general PCR test. Where PCR testing is required for travel purposes, it must be processed through approved external laboratories such as CVRL, not in-house veterinary facilities. This is important to understand because in-house PCR results are not accepted for official international travel documentation. We will confirm exactly what is needed for your destination and ensure the process is handled correctly.

How quickly will I receive PCR test results?

In-house point-of-care tests including rapid antigen panels and some blood values are available within the same appointment. PCR panels sent to our partner laboratory typically return results within 24 to 72 hours depending on the test panel. For time-sensitive travel documentation, book your appointment as early as possible and confirm your travel date with our team.

Can I request a full diagnostic workup for my healthy pet as a screening tool?

Yes. A full blood panel including complete blood count, liver and kidney function, glucose, and electrolytes is a valuable baseline for any adult or senior pet, even when no illness is present. Screening identifies early changes in organ function that are invisible from the outside and give us a reference point for future comparisons. We include a senior diagnostic panel as a standard recommendation for pets over 7 years at their annual wellness check.
